spent yesterday over at That Apartment, putting together a new machine (part 2) (bonus points for anyone who gets that reference, but not many; it's not _that_ obscure) and installing win2k on it. didn't really take too long. so i now have a fully functional machine, which is a nice change. and it's even a presentable gaming machine.

after we got 2k installed we tried to install Thief Gold. interesting thing about Thief is that the install program will auto-detect your OS, and since it requires DirectX to run it won't let you install on NT. problem being that 2k is pretty much built off of the NT kernel, so it registers as being NT, even though it's got DirectX and other spiffy things to make it run programs like normal. so we tried a program that came with 2k to convince the installer that it was really running 98, and got some interesting errors (specifically, "Setup.exe has generated errors and halted. An application log is being generated.") whenever we tried it. but then i went online and found that the LookingGlass people (designers of Thief) had built in a switch to force it to install on a NT machine. if you care, to install Thief Gold onto 2k, run "setup.exe -lgntforce".

so all is good. :)
