Apr. 3rd, 2001 12:51 pmThe lack of a computer means that I'm falling way way way behind on updating my book list... five Taltos books and three Susan Cooper books. Irritating.
The new motherboard came yesterday, so I plugged everything in and tried to make it go, and it's now giving me a bunch of random errors when it accesses the hard drive... everything from fatal exceptions to "Error loading user.exe. You must reinstall Windows."
(geek)
To me, this sounds an awful lot like the BIOS is failing to use the Ultra ATA/66 on the hard drive... but the drive has Ultra ATA/66 turned off. I tried disabling the DMA in the BIOS, but it didn't help.
According to the net, my problem is either that my memory has gone bad (yay... but at least memory is cheap these days) or some fairly important Windoze files have spontaneously become corrupted. So this evening I'll try to replace the files... I left the drive running a surface scan when I went to work. Bah.
