"Technology is a wonderful thing, Sam."
Mar. 4th, 2006 01:46 pmSo, since I have a steady job and a bit of disposable income, I went ahead and bought myself a Neo to replace the missing Dana. Neo's basically just a mobile word processor; Dana had an awful lot of extra features that I either didn't use (most of the PalmOS stuff) or served as distractions (the games). Essentially, with Neo I lose the backlight, a bit of screen size, and the ability to check email and post to LJ remotely. The screen's not much of an issue; the backlight is a bit troubling, but the contrast is good enough that it's not an issue for normal use. I do miss the lack of insta-post-ability, though. I may need to get a wireless-enabled Palm device just so I can do that. (I find myself curiously tempted by one of them new-fangled phone/PDA combos. But I dunno. I'm holding off on getting a new phone until I get settled in any case.)
Neo can send and receive text from the computer. Unfortunately, for Neo to receive text I need to install the software that came with it. This is made difficult by the fact that ever since I replaced the horrible noisy case fan on Wednesday and futzed a bit with IDE devices, neither of my CD drives will recognise that they've got a CD in them. (Help?)
I'm seriously pondering the move to a laptop. I'd still want to use my keyboard and my kickass trackball, but the combined appeal of a) portable net access when I travel and b) being able to send the sucker back to the factory when something dumb stops working has a lot going for it. It's a bit harder to get a good gaming laptop, but then the vast majority of my gaming is done on the Cube these days anyway.
La. It's a surprisingly gorgeous day outside. Spring is springin' and I'm still in here, as usual. Maybe I'll get out and wander today.
The above was written on Neo and then sent to Semagic via USB. That was so cool. Neo sends text by acting as a keyboard and pretending to "type" what's in the file you're sending, so you can watch it appear on the screen as though you're typing really fast, without making any mistakes.
One problem with writing LJ entries on Neo is that I can't fire up Firefox and dig up a hyperlink; I have to either remember to link something, notice it later, or put in a LINK flag and hope I remember to look for it before posting. (Another problem is that I lose the formatting commands I get with Semagic; no more ctrl-I / B / U, no more ctrl-alt-U for lj user=.)
Overall? Happy. It's a Good Thing.
