So, ran Changeling last night. Yeah. Better than I'd feared. Better than I'd expected, even. At the least it'll be a fun interlude for a couple weeks (this story is likely to take at least two more sessions, maybe three), and if I get inspired and people enjoy it, it may become an ongoing thing. (Two or three of my players are just totally
thrilled to be playing Changeling, which is always encouraging. And it
is fun to run. Where else can you watch a bluebird try to operate a computer, or sabotage an air conditioner with a FUBAR?)
On the other hand, the Storyteller system has its, um, quirks. People generally don't
fail at rolls, removing much of the point of the dice in the first place. (When the answer to "Can I do this?" is invariably "Yes," you might as well be playing Amber.) I've tweaked the Social attributes but remain unsure what to do with Appearance. (If you care, I replaced Charisma and Manipulation with
Children of the Sun's Charm, Leadership, and Ferocity, and thrown Appearance out the window. CotS lets players pick their Appearance, from +2 to -2, and applies it as a positive modifier to Charm rolls and a negative one to Ferocity. This feels like a cop-out-- there are few things scarier than an enraged sidhe, despite/because of their legendary beauty-- but I got no better ideas.) But it seems to be doing well enough.
(For those who might care (my future self included) I'm running "The Quixote Syndrome" out of the first edition Book of Storyteller Secrets. I ran this once about four years ago, for a group that definitely included
uilos and Stephen Bush, as well as others who I'm not certain of. I feel a lot more confident in my abilities this time around.)
