from an article on business accounting practices, but the haze of bitterness that clouds my perception makes it seem applicable to my last two jobs as well.
life goes on. chemistry test this morning. i have no idea how well i did, which is kind of worrying. on the other hand, it's no good worrying about it *now*.
packing is, surprisingly, mostly done. three more days. followed by ~5 months in lisaneil's, and then maybe i can see my books again, but hey. three more days.
finished Nobilis and UA2. full review of Nobilis will be forthcoming One Of These Days. UA2 is quite good, although the lack of any cross-referencing and a so-so index make finding things in it kind of tricky. i'm now reading through Children of the Sun (described as "dieselpunk fantasy"), and am kind of unimpressed. the introfic was only two pages long, although it still more or less started with "Purple prose rained down like a bad metaphor," and the history section is nigh-incomprehensible, because you have no idea where anything is, or who the races are, or what anyone's average lifespan is, et cetera. plus there's the irritating time-stretching effect ("the war raged on for ninety-one years"-- do the authors have *any* concept of what a ninety-one year war is likely to *do* to a country? for starters, there're no more peasants to till the fields-- the last of them were conscripted about fifty years ago) that comes up so often in Bad Fantasy. on the other hand, the editing is pretty good, the book is very pretty, and the system seems usable.
