so i went to see "Attack of the *snicker* Clones" last night, because i could. mostly for braggin' rights, i think: "yeah, i was one of those wackos who went to see the movie at MIDNIGHT the day it opened! and i bought tickets a WEEK beforehand so i could be sure of getting in! and we sat in line at the theatre for TWO HOURS before it opened!" but we *did* get good seats

non-spoiler review: it's better than _phantom menace_. it might even be better than _jedi_. speaking as someone who actually didn't like _empire_ all that much, it wasn't better than _empire_. it was sort of incoherent and not well focused, and the Big Climactic Battle Sequence at the end just... kept... going... and didn't ever let up to let you catch your breath and think "okay, so *that's* why *this* group of people are fighting this other group..." it stays on coruscant for far too long, and then splits up obi-wan and anakin without giving them people to riff off of, so we lose the witty repartee. (well, anakin has amidala, but the witty repartee there is replaced by mooning about.)

jar-jar binks has all of about four scenes, for which everyone is grateful. the clones of the movie's title are pretty cool. i remain irritated by the _star wars_ universe's complete lack of shades of grey

at one point, anakin and obi-wan take off after count dooku, and my reaction was "and so ewan macgregor and some TV actor are going to kick christopher lee's ass. right. will it be frank oz or sam jackson that shows up to save their bacon?" speaking of whom, christopher lee was very cool, and should have had more screen time. like the previous movie, this one suffers from underdeveloped villainy.

overall i'd recommend it, i think. with lots of popcorn. just don't expect it to recreate _star wars_.

if you don't mind spoilers, andrew rilstone's mostly brilliant review went up sometime this morning. (rilstone is the one responsible for How to Misread LOTR, aka Do Balrogs Have Wings?)
