Games and fireworks
Jul. 5th, 2003 11:13 amSpent much of the week goofing off, playing Vortex (a formerly-collectible strategic tile game; Z bought a box containing all four starter sets plus some other stuff for $20) with Z. Good game, although a bit unbalanced (to quote Mike Sugarbaker, "by which I mean the Host owns. Even when I play them"). Fiction-writing class is interesting, to say the least. It's not something that I have instant mastery of, so I'm having to learn, for what may be the first time in years. I'm not automatically perfect at everything I put my hand to! I think it'll be a good class, though I have no idea what the professor's opinion on genre fiction is. Guess I'll find out.
Worked all day yesterday (well, 'all day' being 11-6:30). Bought a copy of Disciples II because I've been wanting a good turn-based 'puter game, and it claimed to come with a card game too. (The card game looks overly complex, but might be fun to play anyway.) Failed to acquire the Captain Najork books through work, so I'm stuck with Amazon.co.uk or hitting up someone over there. (Since that's only
lekythen who may or not ever come back here again and
shadowsong who I don't know when is heading over, or back, it's probably the former option. I've not bought anything through them since Cale's autobiography came out five or six years ago, but I remember it as being a mostly painless process.)
After work went straight over to Lisa&Neil's. (Skipped the One True Party due to still somewhat recovering from Origins. Maybe next year.) Played Mag-Blast, Medici, and Torres, and got my butt kicked at Amplitude. Started feeling antisocial about an hour or so in, but stayed around anyway. Watched the fireworks (very impressive) from the front yard. Fireworks are far better experienced with other people there.
There's a Calvin & Hobbes where Calvin is kvetching about how much people suck, and why would anyone want friends? Hobbes points out how beautiful the sunset is, and how it's the sort ot thing that's better with someone else.
Calvin: "Well, yeah, I guess so... but I'd still rather have a tiger than a person."
Hobbes: "That goes without saying."
And now to acquire groceries, because Tucker Needs Food Badly.
