That was pretty much exactly my impression of Reamde: I liked the characters and the writing style but I kept waiting for him to start writing the Neal Stephenson book. Plus it seems like he spent a lot of time setting up the characters of the writers and the WOR and so forth, and completely forgot to do anything with them. I was waiting for Skeletor to be behind the whole thing (seemed like an obvious bad guy) but nope, never heard from him again.
